We ready ourselves for the future by readying you for leadership. Because it’s your ideas that will support and improve the capabilities of BEIS and beyond.

The Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS), has been at the forefront of the fight against coronavirus and is now leading Britain’s recovery by tackling climate change, unleashing innovation and backing business. In the Energy and Security Group of BEIS, our vision is to ensure the UK has a reliable, low cost and clean energy system. We work on a whole host of exciting programmes to deliver on this commitment, including maximising our indigenous energy supplies, bringing new generation capacity on stream, including low-carbon sources of energy, and making sure that we maximise the economic opportunities for the UK’s energy sector.

To continue to respond effectively to the ever-evolving challenges we face, we encourage new thinking at every step. We are constantly looking to diversify our workforce to give us the broadest range of perspectives possible. We make the most of these different perspectives to solve important and complex policy issues and improve the capabilities of BEIS and beyond.

As a Department built on innovation, we are looking at new ways to proactively develop our next generation of leaders. Through the creation of a Talent Pool, we want to attract individuals into the civil service at Deputy Director level. You will work at the heart of the Department and Senior Civil Service to design, develop and deliver policy and programmes to meet our ministerial priorities for this new decade.

Applying to be part of this Talent Pool initiative will provide you with tools and learning to help you prepare for the most senior roles in BEIS and give you practical advice around the transition into government. We will quickly upskill you in the areas where you have less experience so prior knowledge of for example, energy policy is not required. Participation will also ensure you are more visible for potential roles so that you can be pro-actively alerted to potential opportunities as these arise.

We believe diversity and inclusion are the right thing to do, and that they make us a more innovative, welcoming Department which is a better employer, that makes better decisions. We therefore particularly welcome applications from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds.

Required skills and experience:

  • An inspiring team leader with exceptional emotional intelligence.
  • Experience of building strong relationships with stakeholders.
  • Have sound policy and analytical skills, with the ability to interpret complex data and inform decision-making.
  • Persuasive and engaging communicator and committed to providing empowering support to ensure individuals and teams always remain effective.

At BEIS, we offer our people an excellent benefits package, including attractive annual leave, a Civil Service pension with employer contributions, flexible working options, a range of family friendly policies as well as an employee discount scheme. We also offer a range of networking opportunities, coaching schemes from quality providers, as well as strong learning and development programmes.
